According to the National Crime Victimization Survey, in 2012 there were an estimated 1.2 million violent crimes committed against persons’ age 65 and older. That’s a rate of 9 per 1,000 persons’ age 65 or older, up from 6 per 1,000 in 2007. The vast majority of these crimes – more than 90 percent – are property crimes such as burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft. But almost 10 percent are violent crimes such as rape, sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated assault.
